Life Off the Grid 22 - The Folk Festival Journey - July 5, 2012

Life off the grid 22 – Folk festival July 5, 2012

The morning began with rain, but soon it was bright and warm.

The space is filling with tents. Many more seem to have sprung up over night.

Lots of bicycles in the various bicycle racks. Some people ride to the festival from Winnipeg. Others bring bikes with them and use them to go back and forth around the campsite and to the festival site.

There is a row of food vendors inside the campsite offering early breakfasts, late night snacks and food all day.

I am fascinated with the Mayan Temple.

I didn't notice the night before, but apparently the “beets” are also torches...

There are handy sign posts in the campground as well.

So many tents!

Kite flying is popular in the campground.

An interesting habitation. It appears to be made of cardboard covered with some reflective material...

The trailheads are also marked with beautiful fairies.

The trail leading to the camp store (open 24 hours and selling everything from firewood to tent pegs to chips and drinks to toothbrushes) and beyond that, to the parking lots.
Volunteers find ways to amuse themselves...

So very many cars!

I headed out at 9 AM to go back to the city and get things done. My list was long. I stopped at Safeway and got shampoo and conditioner and a couple of other things we had forgotten. I went to Heather's apartment and showered and got a few things she wanted. I put some things in the mail at Shoppers Drug Mart. I went to Princess Auto and got 3 tool boxes for the lake. I went to Home Depot and got the two replacement windows ordered for the cabin. Also bought a wheelbarrow. Picked up beer for our little group of campers. Finally managed to head back to the campground, but didn't get there until after 3 PM.

Some interesting vehicles around here.

I am amazed by the number of different styles and sizes of tents...

Men in kilts!

An intriguing rolling cage...

And a Mayan football game (aka soccer)
Complete with cheerleaders!

And a goalie in a loin cloth...

The Parade

Every evening, shortly before the main stage concert begins, there is a parade through the campground. There are musicians, tumblers, dancers, singers and others. Everyone is welcome to join in...

Steampunk car

With the weather so hot, the mister was very popular. It is moved every day to a different part of the campground.

Bird's eye view of the parade

 Bubbles, anyone?

The parade makes a stop at Pope's Hill.

And then heads out to finish the rounds

Some time during the day, a sort of circus thing appeared next to our campsite.

The parade makes a final stop just before heading out to the festival site...

Our campsite...

Our new neighbours...

One of their tents is amazingly tall!

Meet the neighbours!

One of the neighbours on the other side was having a meltdown this afternoon because his generator wouldn't work so he couldn't pump up his air mattress. Someone loaned him a generator and he pumped up this huge thick double mattress. The mind boggles. Really. We are sleeping on the ground over here.

Main Stage
Billy Bragg was the headliner. He put on an energetic and politically infused show.

Back at the campsite after main stage...
Some sort of performance going on at the Mayan Temple.

And the main event over on Pope Hill.

The nightly fire dance show starts off with hoops of lights...

And then they bring in the fire...

After the fire dance, Heather and I went and found her friend and musical collaborator, Nyk Bielak, at his campsite. There was a jam going on and Heather participated. I just sat back and enjoyed. For an example of what these two sound like, check out the Pastry Castle video on youtube.

The “beet” torches

Light sculpture

One of our solar lamps – magical!

I was coming back from the outhouse and, lo! And behold! There was a pyramid...
